Isaac Campbell's jury announced they could not come to a verdict Thursday after . Campbell, 36, is charged with one count of first-degree murder in the August 2007 death of his ex-girlfriend, Liya "Jessie" Lu, 31.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said Campbell remains in custody, but did not announce whether they will seek a new trial in the case. Campbell is due in court Jan. 12 for a pretrial hearing in the matter.

Prosecutors say Campbell placed Lu in a martial arts hold that compressed the carotid arteries in her neck, inducing cardiac arrhythmia within 10 to 30 seconds.
The defense team says Lu likely died of an undiagnosed seizure disorder. A doctor testified that Lu came to him in April 2007 with complaints of severe headaches and nausea, symptoms that accompany both migraines and partial seizure disorders.

What neither side disputes is that Campbell went to great lengths to conceal her death. He testified that he put her body in a trash can, topped it with cat litter and hid in the garage of a friend's home in Arcadia.
He then fled to Minnesota, where authorities arrested him and extradited him to California to face charges.
