Arcadia Police Launch Bike Patrols

Bike patrols to increase approachability, while enhancing mobility, police said.

Officers have started patrolling the Breeder's Cup, utilizing the department's new bicycle patrol unit.

The program was launched during the event as part of the operations deployment at the Santa Anita Race Track. Spearheaded by two of the department's detectives, according to information provided by the Arcadia Police Information Blog.

The program will be staffed by police personnel in addition to their daily assignments. Four fully-outfitted bicycles will be operated in the program. Equipment was acquired through private donations and assistance from Helen's Cycles and Rusnak in Arcadia, police said.

"The use of bicycles instead of cars can make our police officers more easily approachable, will enhance the mobility and range of foot patrols, and the bicycles will be effective crime-fighting tools when used in densely populated or congested areas," Authorities said.

Arcadia Police seeks to deploy the bicycle unit at many other events in the future, including for enforcement details.
