The city held a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday for a museum education center that will be located Arcadia Community Center and the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage.

The 2,650 square foot Museum Education Center's primary focus will be to provide space for educational programs and activities including art, crafts and lectures for children, seniors and other groups, according to Linda Garcia, the city's project manager.

The center is needed to meet existing demand for such activities in the city and will also allow for the expansion of those activities in the future, according to a press release from the city.

The Arcadia Museum Education Center is a joint effort of the City of Arcadia and the Arcadia Historical Museum Foundation. The budget for the building is $877,339 with $500,000 of that being donated by the Foundation.

The building is scheduled to be open in May of 2014.
