Jewish Federation Establishes Hurricane Sandy Victims' Fund

The Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys has reached out to help Hurricane Sandy victims.

The Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys has opened a Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund to raise money for those affected by the hurricane and its related storms.

The organization is based in Arcadia and serves Jewish people throughout the Valley.

"Jews have always wanted...to help, and the Jewish Federation is the voice of the Jewish community," Federation Executive Director Jason Moss said. "100 percent of all funds raised will go to those affected by Hurricane Sandy."

Community members wishing to make contributions for this cause can do so in one of two ways. The first is to mail, call or drop-off contributions at the Jewish Federation (Attn: Sandy Relief, 550 S. Second Avenue, Arcadia, CA 91006 or 626.445.0810).  Or, you may donate to the Jewish Federation of North America (JFNA) online and designate that the donation is for JFNA Hurricane Relief Fund.

All funds collected by the Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys will be directed to social welfare agencies in the affected areas serving both the Jewish and general communities. The Jewish Federation will absorb all administrative costs, ensuring that 100% of all donations go directly to aid those most grievously affected.

While we will not know the full extent of the storm’s damage for a number of days, it is safe to assume that there will be a lot of people in need.

The American Red Cross has also encouraged people to make blood and platelet donations to support the blood needs of those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

And even if you don't donate to the Federation's fund, "people should find ways to give and support," Moss said.

Hi Susan, The graphic shows that in only one year from 2002-2011 were more Hispanics arrested thanRead More Blacks (2011) - if you hover your mouse over each point you can see the raw number of arrests for each group each year. That's despite there being a substantially larger Hispanic population in L.A. County. The data comes from the Dept. of Justice and was reported by the ACLU - and I believe the point of the report is that there is racial profiling going on, not to suggest that black people are using more pot. In fact, the study suggests that there is not significantly more prevalent pot use among any one racial group. The figure 2.6 times as likely refers to blacks vs. whites, as in mentioned in the first sentence of the article, and comes from the ACLU study. Our intention was definitely not sensationalism but rather to direct readers to this national ACLU study that included L.A. County data. Let me know if I can answer any other questions.
