Jim and Shelly Romo are Arcadia's Citizens of the Year for 2013-14.
The couple, who met in seventh-grade, has devoted their lives to volunteer service through scouting, schools, church and myriad of other organizations.
“Our participation in this wonderful community has given us many rewards—the most important is the friendship of so many giving and caring people,” the couple said in a joint statement.
A former school teacher, Shelly has twice served as president of Assistance League of Arcadia. She is also a former president of the Sierra Madre Nursery School board of directors and has served in various capacities on the PTAs of Highland Oaks Elementary School, Foothills Middle School and Arcadia High School.
Meanwhile, Jim, a partner at the law firm of Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Rund & Romo, has signed on as board member for the new Performing Arts Center Foundation.
Prior to that, Jim spent 10 years on the Arcadia Unified School District Board of Education and served two terms as president of the Arcadia Educational Foundation. He also helped coach and advise to the AHS Constitution Team.
When not volunteering, the couple enjoys spending time with their two grandchildren and three adult children.
The Chamber of Commerce will honor the Romos on March 21 at its 2013 Citizen of the Year / Installation Dinner. The dinner will be held in the Chandelier Room at Santa Anita Park.
