Three-Foot Bike Passing Bill Passes State Legislature (Discussion)

The struggle between drivers and pedestrians has been frequently discussed on Altadena Patch. How will the new law effect those issues?

The California State Legislature has approved a bill that would legally require drivers to give cyclists at least three feet of space when they pass them while driving in the same lane.

The bill, SB 910, will go to Gov. Jerry Brown's desk to be signed or rejected.  If passed, California would be the 19th state to have a passing law of this type, according to the California Bicycle Coalition, which wrote a post about the bill last week.

Altadena's state Senator, Carol Liu, voted in favor of the bill, while Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, D- La Canada Flintridge, abstained or was absent from voting, according to state logs.
