Jewish Federation Presents 'Mame'

The Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys is bringing the musical "Mame" to Arcadia.

"Mame" is the story of Auntie Mame, who becomes the guardian for her 10-year-old nephew, Patrick, during the height of the 1920s. Her life is turned upside down, but she still lives it to the fullest, spouting the catchphrase “life is a banquet!”

The musical made a splash on Broadway with the legendary Angela Lansbury in the titular role and in 1974 was made into a film starring Lucille Ball.

"Mame" marks the third production for the federation's Cultural Arts Program, which was begun in 2010 and includes an orchestra, a challah bread-making club and regular poetry readings and art showcases.

The program is an avenue through which the Federation hopes to reach out to both Jewish and non-Jewish people.

"[The program] is important because we see it as a door through which people can become involved," spokesperson Shoshana Hess said. "If you come to see a show, maybe you'll want to help with the next show and actually become involved. The whole reason for the program is so that people can meet one another and become involved in culture and cultural arts."
