The Best Chinese Food in California: Arcadia Restaurant Makes Top Ten List

Los Angeles attorney David Chan, who has eaten at more than 6,000 Chinese restaurants, says one Arcadia restaurant is among the best.

David Chan, a lean Los Angeles attorney, who admits he hated Chinese food as a child and prefers a fork over chopsticks, has become a major culinary resource for the best Chinese restaurants in the country.

Chan, 64, is often asked by restaurant critics and food websites about his favorite Chinese hangouts. Ask him about a particular neighborhood in Southern California, he usually has an answer for the nearest Chinese restaurant, according to a profile in the Los Angeles Times.

And there’s a reason why the foodie world holds Chan’s knowledge at such high regard. He has eaten at more than 6,200 Chinese restaurants – 6,297 to be exact – across the country and abroad. He even has the spreadsheet to prove it.

While it may seem hard to narrow down those 6,000-plus restaurants to his 10 favorites, one Arcadia restaurant made the list.

Dumpling house favorite Din Tai Fung is number six on Chan’s list. It is the only Shanghai–style restaurant on the list, with Chan noting its specialty – Xiao Long Bao, a cross between a wonton and a real dumpling.
