Patch Blog: Arcadians Helping Hands

Over 100 volunteers spent last Saturday clearing historical headstones dating back to the early 19th Century.

This last Saturday thousands of Mormons worked together with their communities to serve California parks, municipalities and nonprofits throughout the state. Local residents of Arcadia and Temple City coordinated with the Volunteer Center of San Gabriel Valley to support the Savannah Cemetery in Rosemead.

Over 100 volunteers from Arcadia and Temple City helped clear headstones dating back to the early 19th century. Volunteers cleared overgrown grass, leveled decaying headstones and uncovered half a dozen aged headstones. The Daughters of the Confederacy provided new headstones for three graves of Civil War veterans. The Savannah Cemetery is located at the Savannah Memorial Park at 9263 Valley Boulevard, Rosemead, 91770.

The Mormon Helping Hands project began in 1998, when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints asked local South American Church leaders to reach out to their communities through service. Responding to the call, leaders set out to establish an annual Day of Service. This was the third year for projects in California.
