Gran Fondo Cycling Event Spins Through Arcadia on Sunday

The Gran Fondo Giro d'Italia cycling event passes through Arcadia Sunday morning.

A horde of cyclists will ride through Arcadia along Foothill Boulevard Sunday for the Pasadena Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia bike race that benefits the Wounded Warrior project.

The race originates in Pasadena and makes a loop through the San Gabriel Valley. The inaugural Gran Fondo was held last year.

"The Gran Fondo Giro d'Italia is the closest thing you'll find to an authentic European cycle-sportive without having to cross the Atlantic," said former pro Neil Shirley, best timer of the previous edition, in a prepared statement. "After experiencing the Pasadena Fondo last year, it became a must-do
event for 2013. Scenic terrain, well stocked rest stops, and an amazing post-ride feast are three reasons why the Pasadena event is back on my list."

The ride begins at 7 a.m. at Pasadena City Hall and the course closes at 4 p.m. An awards ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. See a map of the course here.
