The Meaning Behind April Fools' Day

A video explains the meaning of the day that can be traced back to the 1500s.

Ever wonder why on April 1 pranksters can run amuck and embarrassing jokes are easily excused with the simple phrase, “April Fool”? Well lucky for us, YouTube video creator Jeremiah Warren has created an amusing video that looks at the history of the comedic day.

In the video, Warren says that All Fools’ Day or April Fools’ Day can most likely be traced back to the early 1500s in France during reformation of the calendar to the Gregorian Calendar, switching New Years from April 1 to Dec. 31. Unfortunately, not everyone received the memo about the date change and those that continued to celebrate the old holiday were ridiculed and called fools, giving rise to the now popular day of pranks and jokes.
