Zumbathon Charity Event at Relay for Life Arcadia

Zumba dancers to gather for an 8-hour Zumba fitness party on the infield of the Santa Anita Racetrack on Saturday, June 15th from 12:30pm to 8:30pm.

As part of the Relay For Life, Zumba instructors are hosting a Zumbathon® to raise money to support the American Cancer Society. As many as 30 instructors will tag-team teach an 8-hour Zumba fitness party on the infield of the Santa Anita Racetrack on Saturday, June 15th from 12:30pm to 8:30pm.

Dancers will get an opportunity to experience the styles of dance of different instructors from around Los Angeles. Choreographies will be led in a follow-along format to accommodate all levels of fitness. Dance experience is not necessary – just a desire to have fun and get fit. Intensity levels will vary throughout the day, from low-tempo Zumba Gold to fast-paced Zumba. Participants may jump in or out of the party at any time, but there will be organized warm-up stretching each hour to help prevent injury.

The Zumbathon® will mirror the parent event Relay for Life, where participants form teams and ensure a team member is always walking laps around the track; however, instead of walking laps, Zumbathon® participants will dance choreography sets. Food vendors, live entertainment, water, shade, and amenities will all be available for the participants in both events.

The Zumbathon® is being organized by local husband-and-wife Zumba instructor team James and Thea Komen who teach classes for City of Arcadia Recreation.

James has a background in swing dance and track & field. He combines dance flavor with a high energy aerobic workout. In fast and slow dance numbers alike, all his cues are crisp and clear. Each week, he rotates in new choreographies for a fresh-feeling class every time. You're sure to be sweating and smiling when James is in the lead. Often, you will see him co-teach and tag-team with his wife Thea to add an extra bit of energy to the class.

Thea Komen is a long time musician and dancer and holds a Master of Music degree in Afro-Latin music. She has been an instructor of Bellydance since 2005 and of music since 1997. Thea's Zumba classes are the highlight of her week, bringing energy, joy, and fitness to an enthusiastic crowd since 2008. Visit her website at www.MissThea.com
