Arcadia Eye Surgeon Who Overcame Polio Dies at 84

Harold "Hal" Ward beat polio as a 28-year-old USC medical student.

Eye surgeon Harold "Hal" Ward didn't let polio stop him from finishing medical school — or becoming legendary sailor and winning the 1995 Transpacific Yacht Race.

The Pasadena Star-News reported the pioneering doctor died of a suspected heart attack Thursday in his Arcadia home. He was 84-years-old.

Ward is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joyce Ward; sons Harold and Eric; grandson Wesley; and sister Annette Breckow of Vista, Ca.
