Arcadia FIrefighters Assist in Evacuating Mt. Sierra College After Smoke Reported

Nearly two dozen firefighters responded to the Mt. Sierra College campus on Huntington Drive Monday night after smoke billowing from the roof of a building prompted the evacuation of a night class while it was in session.

Instructor Joe Busigan, who teaches digital publication at the school, said he called 9-1-1 at about 10 p.m. when he smelled smoke from his classroom inside the main building at Mt. Sierra. He then pulled the fire alarm and led his class outside.

Battalion Chief Kevin Valentine of the Arcadia Fire Department, which responded to the college along with Monrovia and Los Angeles County units, said that firefighters did not yet know the source of the smoke but determined that it was isolated to the outside of the structure. He said the smoke may have been caused by an air conditioning problem.

No one was immediately reported injured or missing but Valentine said authorities were still working to determine if everyone in the building was accounted for.

Police blocked off the westbound lanes of Huntington Drive from Ivy Avenue to Huntington Drive Monday night as firefighters investigated the source of the smoke.
