Arcadia Police Arrest 3 Residential Burglary Suspects

Sierra Madre Police assisted in the arrest after overhearing an APD radio transmission.

Sierra Madre Police assisted units in the arrest of three men suspected of burglarizing a home in Arcadia Thursday morning. The stop was made at around 8:45 a.m., Thursday, March 11, on Baldwin Avenue near the 210 freeway, according to a released statement from Sgt. Tom Le Veque of the Arcadia PD.

Arcadia Police were contacted after “loud and continuous knocking on her front door” disturbed a woman in her home in the 400 block of Arbolada Drive in Arcadia, police said. According to Sgt. Le Veque, the woman looked through the door's peephole and did not recognize the man who was knocking.

After seeing the suspect enter the backyard, the woman and her husband quickly called police to report an attempted break-in. Soon after, the residents saw the two male suspects walking out of the backyard, down the driveway and into the street, authorities said.

A short time later, an SMPD officer stopped a vehicle containing occupants matching the description of the suspects in the attempted burglary.

“We overheard the transmission on the Arcadia PD channel and responded,’” Sgt. Joe Ortiz of the SMPD said Friday.

While there was no vehicle description included in the radio transmission, the responding SMPD officer was able to identify the suspects within the vehicle, according to Sgt. Ortiz.

Arcadia PD units responded to assist in the traffic stop and were able to positively identify two of the suspects.

The three men taken into custody were Kenneth M. Battle, 25, of Los Angeles, Justin D. Tyson, 29, of Fontana and Dewayne M. Tyars, 25, of Redlands. Battle and Tyson were both booked on felony charges of attempted residential burglary and receiving stolen property and were put on a parole hold with no bail. Tyars, the third suspect, was booked on the same felony charges and bail was set at $50,000. All three suspects were taken to the Arcadia City Jail, according to police.

Lt. Paul Foley of the APD said the suspects were being looked at for other burglaries in the area, but he could not offer specifics on which ones the men may have committed.

Additional evidence, including jewelry and other items, found inside the men's car could help police in identifying if the men committed additional burglaries, Foley said.

Foley said it is not uncommon for Sierra Madre and Arcadia police units to work in tandem as they did Thursday.

"Between Arcadia, Sierra Madre and Monrovia, we pretty much give each other a hand," Lt. Foley said. "It's kind of a you scratch our back, we scratch your back type of thing. We try to help each other out."
