Arraignment for Fatal Strip Mall Stabbing Suspect Postponed

Juan Lorenzo will be arraigned next month in Pasadena.

Arraignment for the suspect in the fatal stripmall stabbing of a Pomona teen was postponed Thursday.

Juan Lorenzo, 31, is charged with one count of murder and felony assault with a deadly weapon in the death of 18-year-old Anthony Berry. Lorenzo is scheduled to appear at the Los Angeles County Superior Courthouse in Pasadena on Jan. 5 to answer to those charges.

District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Jane Robison said Berry is being held in lieu of $1.3 million bail.

Investigators say an altercation between Lorenzo and Berry led to Tuesday's stabbing behind the stripmall at 1300 South Golden West Avenue. Berry was taken by ambulance to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where he later died of his wounds.

Meanwhile, police arrested Lorenzo, along with his co-worker, Jose Antonio Cruz Ramirez, 26, at the scene.

Authorities have since released Ramirez from custody due to insufficident evidence to charge him with the crime.

Police say they located the knife used in the stabbing at the Money Pot restaurant at 1236 South Golden West Ave, where Lorenzo worked. The restaurant was closed at the time of the incident, around 9:30 p.m.
