Bomb Scare Led to Westfield Santa Anita Mall Evacuation

Multiple police and fire units responded to the busy shopping center over a possible bomb threat and evacuated the area for 90 minutes Thursday night.

Several fire and police units responded to the Promenade area of the Westfield Santa Anita Shopping Center Thursday at around 6:15 p.m. regarding a suspicious item found in a rear corridor, according to Lieutenant Bob Anderson of the Arcadia Police Department.

The suspicious item had the appearance of a possible explosive device, said officials. Several stores in the shopping center were evacuated and a perimeter was established to keep patrons out of the area pending an investigation, wrote Anderson.

Units from Los Angeles County Arson/Explosive Detail were contacted and responded to assist with the situation.  Upon further inspection, the device was determined to not have been an explosive in nature.

Evacuations remained in effect for about 90 minutes before the threat was cleared, according to officials.
