Fire Blotter: Vehicle Fire

The Arcadia Fire Department also dealt with a structure fire and several medical assists.

The responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Aug. 19-25. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this period:

Medical Assist: Fainting

At 2:47 p.m. on Aug. 19, Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive. Fire crews evaluated a man with a head injury that occurred when he fell during a fainting episode. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene and transported him to for further evaluation and treatment.

Injury Accident

At 10:33 a.m. on Aug. 20, Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a reported minor trauma in the 300 block of East Live Oak Avenue. Fire crews evaluated a woman complaining of shoulder pain. The patient said she injured her shoulder in a vehicle collision that had taken place earlier in the day. Paramedics provided basic life support on scene, including manual stabilization of the shoulder and full spinal immobilization. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

On Aug. 21 at 9:57 p.m. Arcadia Fire Department responded to a in the City of Arcadia. Engine 105, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105, along with an engine from Monrovia Fire Department, arrived on-scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters witnessed a fully involved structure fire in a detached two-car garage with an attached carport on a vacant property. A live power line was draped across the top of the garage and carport. The incident commander notified Southern California Edison of the downed power line.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze within 20 minutes. No other structures were damaged during this incident. The estimated property loss is $70,000. The cause of the fire appears to be accidental and remains under investigation.

Medical Assist: Altered Level of Consciousness

At 11:25 a.m. on Aug. 22, Truck 105 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the intersection of Fairview Avenue and La Cadena Avenue. Fire crews evaluated a female patient with an altered level of consciousness. Paramedics performed advanced life support measures on the scene. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Vehicle Fire

At 10:28 p.m. on Aug. 23, Engine 107 and Monrovia Engine 102 responded to a reported vehicle fire on the westbound 210 Freeway at Santa Anita Avenue. Fire Crews found a vehicle on the off-ramp with a fully involved engine compartment fire. Fire crews extinguished and overhauled the vehicle. Investigators determined fluid leaking in the engine compartment caused the fire. Fire personnel cleared the scene of debris and fluid and released the vehicle to Arcadia Police personnel.

Haz Mat Alarm

At 11:29 a.m. on Aug. 24, Engine 106 and Truck 105 responded to a fire alarm in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Fire crews investigating the alarm determined that a smoke detector had activated inside a business due to a refrigerant leak from the air conditioning system. Fire personnel evacuated the business and utilized a four-gas monitor to determine if any gas remained present. Los Angeles County Health Haz Mat Unit was requested to the location for documentation and to authorize the release of employees back inside the business.

Los Angeles County Health Haz Mat and Fire Department personnel determined that natural ventilation had cleared the hazard from the area. Fire personnel advised the business owner to have the air conditioning system repaired by a qualified technician.
