Fire Blotter: Three Fires in One Day

Arcadia firefighters battled two structure fires and a vegetation fire in one day.

The responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of May 20,-26. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this period:

At 9:35 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 300 block of North Santa Rosa Avenue. Fire crews treated an elderly female in cardiac arrest. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene; including endotracheal intubation, cardiac monitoring and defibrillation, intravenous access, and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

Tuesday, May 22

At 8:46 a.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 2100 block of Canyon Road. Fire crews evaluated an elderly patient feeling dizzy and short of breath. Paramedics assessed the patient and performed advanced life support measures on scene; including 12-lead cardiac monitoring, blood glucose monitoring, intravenous access and oxygen therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

 

Wednesday, May 23

At 10:37 p.m., Engine 107 responded to an odor of smoke in the 100 block of West Floral Avenue. Fire personnel investigated the scene and were informed by a resident of the smell of “burning rubber”. Suppression personnel were unable to pinpoint the origin of the odor but utilized a thermal imaging camera to conclude that the odor was not caused by anything actually burning. The odor was conducive with that often associated with a deceased animal. The occupants were advised to contact an exterminator for further investigation.

 

Thursday, May 24

At 9:35 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 100 block of Old Ranch Road. Fire personnel evaluated a male patient who was suffering from an altered mental status. The patient received advanced life support at the scene; including oxygen therapy, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, blood glucose monitoring, and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

 

Friday, May 25

At 1:04 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Fire crews treated an elderly male suffering from chest pains and shortness of breath. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene; including intravenous access, oxygen therapy, 12-lead cardiac monitoring and drug and pain therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

 

Saturday, May 26

At 4:51 p.m., Engine 106 responded to a vegetation fire in Fairview Park. Fire crews extinguished and investigated a small suspicious fire reported to be a 10’ x 20’ section of shrubs on the park property adjacent to an apartment building. The cause of the fire was determined to be from burning embers, carelessly disposed of in nearby shrubs. The area was overhauled to prevent re-ignition.

At 7:39 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, with units from Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a garage fire in the 1500 block of South Fourth Avenue. Fire personnel reported smoke showing from the rear of the structure. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the cause of the smoke was from a rubbish fire next to the structure. The rubbish fire was extinguished and overhauled. The structure sustaining minor damage and charring and was checked for fire extension. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

At 8:50 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105, with units from Monrovia and Los Angeles County Fire Departments, responded to a structure fire in the 200 block of Las Tunas Drive. Fire crews reported a single story single-family residence with heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the structure. Upon further investigation, it was determined that a fully involved patio/storage area to the rear of the property was involved. The fire threatened two adjacent residential
buildings. Exposure protection was provided, the fire extinguished, overhauled, and investigated. It was determined the main structure sustained $80,000 in damage.
