Fire Blotter: 'Carelessly Discarded Cigarette' Causes Brush Fire

A vegetation fire that broke out in the 300 block of Joyce Avenue was caused by a cigarette.

Sunday, April 28
At 7:22 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 1000 block of Volante Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a male patient in full cardiac arrest. Paramedics provided advanced life support at the scene; including CPR, advanced airway placement, oxygen therapy, 12 lead cardiac monitoring, cardiac defibrillation, intravenous access, and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital Emergency Department for further evaluation and treatment, with return of pulses and respirations upon arrival at the hospital.

Monday, April 29
At 8:40 a.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Monrovia Truck 101, Rescue Ambulance 105 and Monrovia Battalion 10 responded to a structure fire in the 1800 block of North Santa Anita Avenue. Engine 107 arrived on scene and reported light smoke coming from the attic area. Fire crews entered the building and found a small incipient stage fire in the attic area. Fire crews extinguished the fire, performed salvage operations in the residence and removed the burnt materials.

Tuesday, April 30

At 1:38 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 400 block of South Santa Anita Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a male patient who was suffering from shortness of breath. The patient received advanced life support at the scene; including oxygen therapy, 12 lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital Emergency Department for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, May 1

At 2:24 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Monrovia Truck 101, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Battalion 105 responded to a structure fire in the 300 block of Joyce Avenue. Engine 105 arrived on scene and reported smoke from a vegetation fire to the rear of the property. Engine 105 personnel stretched a 1” booster line to the rear to extinguish the fire. Engine 107 remained on scene to assist with salvage and overhaul operations, and the balance of the response was cancelled. The quick response and efficient suppression efforts made by firefighters prevented the fire from extending into the adjacent garage or residence. The fire was started by a carelessly discarded cigarette.

Thursday, May 2
At 06:33 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 1100 block of East Camino Real. Fire crews arrived to find a 71 year old male suffering from shortness of breath. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene; including intravenous access and oxygen therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital further evaluation.

At 10:46 a.m., Engine 105 was dispatched to the Springs Incident in Camarillo as part of a five engine Strike Team 1204. Fire crews were utilized in structure defense and fire containment. Strike Team 1204 was disbanded on May 4, 2013, at which time Engine 105 returned to the City.

Friday, May 3
At 4:00 a.m., OES Engine 343 and Battalion 105 were dispatched to the Springs Incident in Camarillo, CA. Arcadia personnel arrived at Camarillo at 6:00 a.m. as part of OES Strike Team 0801A. The Strike Team was assigned to a 24 hour shift to a division tasked with scouting, mop up, and patrol. Following the assignment, the Strike Team was assigned to base and returned to Arcadia on May 5, 2013 at 1:00 p.m.

At 9:40 p.m. Engine 705, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, and Engine 106 assisted units from the Monrovia Fire Department on a structure fire in the 900 block of West Foothill Boulevard in the City of Monrovia. Upon arrival, Arcadia fire personnel assisted with fire extinguishment, salvage and overhaul, and investigation of fire cause and origin.

Engine 107 provided mutual aid and station cover in Pasadena and Burbank for several hours Friday afternoon through late evening during the brush fire in Glendale. Engine 107 crew responded to numerous emergency medical and other type calls.

Saturday, May 4
At 12:10 p.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 00 block of West Woodland Lane. Fire crews arrived to find an 85 year old female experiencing a syncopal episode. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene; including intravenous access, 12 lead electrocardiogram, and oxygen therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital further evaluation.
