Fire Blotter: Choking Infant

The Arcadia Fire Department also dealt with several other medical assists.

The responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of March 4-10.  The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this period:

Monday, March 5

    •    At 8:20 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to medical assist in the 700 block of West Fairview Avenue.  Fire crews evaluated a male toddler who received second-degree burns to the right side of his body.  The child sustained the burns when he spilled a bowl of boiling water on himself.  Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene; including cooling measures and application of a sterile dressing.  The patient was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital for further evaluation treatment.

Tuesday, March 6

    •    At 4:08 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105 and Battalion 105 responded to a report of a vehicle into a structure in the 400 block of East Huntington Drive.   Fire crews investigated a single vehicle up against the structure with one patient lying outside of the vehicle.  Paramedics assessed the patient and determined the patient had experienced a syncopal episode after the vehicle struck the building. The patient was treated with advanced life support measures on scene; including full spinal immobilization and intravenous access.  The patient was transported to for further evaluation and treatment.  Engine personnel contacted the building management and determined there was no damage to the structure or its occupants.

Wednesday, March 7

    •    At 6:26 p.m., Engine 107 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 1800 block of Oak View Lane.  Fire crews evaluated an elderly female suffering from of an altered level of consciousness.  Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene; including intravenous access, oxygen therapy and 12-lead cardiac monitoring.  The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, March 8

    •    At 9:27 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 500 block of Coyle Avenue. Fire personnel evaluated a female patient who was suffering from an altered mental status and post seizure activity. The patient received advanced life support at the scene; including oxygen therapy, cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, blood glucose monitoring, and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital emergency department for further evaluation and treatment.
Friday, March 9

    •    At 11:30 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 100 block of East El Dorado Street. Fire Crews evaluated a male infant who experienced a choking episode while being fed. The infant vomited prior to Fire Department arrival, dislodging the obstruction. The infant was breathing on its own upon fire department arrival. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene, including oxygen therapy. The patient was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital for further evaluation.

Saturday, March 10

    •    At 11:23 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 100 block of El Dorado Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a pediatric patient who was suffering from an altered mental status. The patient received advanced life support at the scene; including oxygen therapy, cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, blood glucose monitoring, and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
