Fire Blotter: Jockey Injured in Fall and CHP Chase Ends in Crash

Jockey Garrett Gomez fractured his heel in a fall from horse, Silver Summation.

The responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of Jan. 8-14. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this period:

Jan. 8:

At 2:15 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 gave medical assistance to a fallen jockey at . Fire crews evaluated , who suffered from a fractured heel as he fell from his horse, Silver Summation. Paramedics placed him in full spinal precautions and transported him to a trauma center for additional evaluation and treatment.

Jan. 9:

At 6 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, and units from the Los Angeles County, Monrovia, and Pasadena Fire Departments responded to a commercial structure fire in the 1200 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Fire personnel encountered smoke on the second floor of the structure. Further investigation by fire crews confirmed a small fire in an air conditioning unit and ductwork of the structure. Fire crews performed a primary search of the structure, fire extinguishment and smoke removal. A thermal imaging camera was utilized to check for fire extension.

Jan. 10:

At 12:04 p.m., Engine 105 responded to arcing wires in the 200 block of South Second Avenue. Fire personnel determined that high voltage lines connecting into the power pole near a structure were arcing. Engine 105 secured the area, contacted Southern California Edison Company and waited for their arrival.

Jan. 11:

At 5:57 p.m., Engine 106, Rescue Ambulance 106 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and Oakhurst Lane for a two-vehicle collision. Fire crews found a rear end collision with moderate damage to both vehicles. Fire personnel evaluated two patients suffering from head and neck pain. Both patients received basic life support measures on scene, including a patient and trauma assessment, and were placed in full spinal immobilization prior to transportation to Huntington Memorial Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Jan. 12:

At 2:15 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a fall victim in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive. Fire crews evaluated one male patient suffering from multiple injuries, having fallen from a horse and hit the guardrail during a race. Paramedics placed the patient in full spinal precautions and transported the patient to a trauma center due to the mechanism of injury for additional evaluation and treatment.

Jan. 13:

At 10:57 p.m., Engine 106 responded to the 800 block of West Duarte Road for a reported sheered hydrant. Fire crews found a single vehicle had crashed into a fire hydrant, creating a large water geyser. The driver of the vehicle was evaluated and did not appear to have any injuries. The vehicle engine was still running upon arrival. Personnel secured the vehicle and turned the ignition off. The water to the hydrant was shut off and Arcadia Public Works Department was notified.

Jan. 14:

At 9:15 p.m., Engine 107, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106 and Battalion 105 responded to a vehicle into a structure in the 1800 block of North Highland Oaks Drive. Fire crews found a small vehicle up against the structure in the front yard of a residence. The California Highway Patrol was in pursuit of the vehicle when they performed a maneuver that resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle and crashing into the structure. Damage to the structure and injury to one of the occupants of the vehicle occurred as a result of the crash. Paramedics assessed the occupant but no further treatment was requested.
