Fire Department Rescues Two Stuck in Elevator

A recap of the emergency calls received by the Arcadia Fire Department.

The responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of March 13 through March 19.  The following is a breakdown of incident types for this period:

Sunday, March 13

At 6:35 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a refuse fire in the 00 block of Alta Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a dumpster fully engulfed with fire, involving small amounts of combustible metals and oils. The fire was extinguished and overhauled with Class A foam.

Monday, March 14

At 4:38 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a reported medical assist in the 00 block of East Live Oak Avenue. While en-route, Fire personnel were advised to stage one block away from the incident to allow to arrive first and secure the scene. Upon arrival, fire personnel found an incoherent and unstable male complaining of back pain. Fire personnel treated and transported the patient to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, March 15

At 10:19 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 1000 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a male patient who was pulseless and apneic.   The patient received advanced life support measures at the scene, including defibrillation and drug therapy.

Wednesday, March 16

At 4:42 p.m., Engine 105 and Truck 105 responded to an elevator rescue in the 600 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a six-story office building with two people trapped in an elevator between the first and second floors. Fire personnel shut down power to the elevator, requested an elevator repair company be called, and utilized elevator rescue tools to safely open the doors and rescue the two occupants. Fire personnel secured the malfunctioning elevator, leaving the power to the elevator in the off position.

Thursday, March 17

At 4:53 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical call in the 200 block of West Palm Drive.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a male patient with a head injury.  The patient had hit his head on a beam, sustaining a laceration and losing consciousness.  The patient was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Friday, March 18

At 8:51 a.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Truck 105, and Battalion 105 responded to a reported major flooding in the 1200 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a large retail store with water flowing from a broken domestic water line located in the ceiling between the first and second floors. Fire personnel, with the assistance of the Water Department, shut off the water to the building and immediately began the water removal process with water vacuum’s and squeegees. Representatives from the Arcadia Fire Prevention Bureau and the City Building Department were requested to respond to the scene to assist the business management. The scene was released to management for further repairs and clean up.

Saturday, March 19

At 1:26 p.m., Engine 106 and Truck 105 responded to a fire alarm in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a light ballast in a storage closet that overheated and began to produce smoke.  Fire personnel contacted building maintenance to repair the light and remained on scene until the fire alarm was reset.

Training

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 464 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 12 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the Department with administrative duties in the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and Department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.

Arcadia Firefighters’ Association

The Arcadia Firefighter's annually participate in the to help raise funds to find a cure for pediatric cancer.  The St. Baldrick's Foundation raises awareness and funding for cancer research by encouraging volunteers to shave their heads.  The AFFA has partnered with the St. Baldrick's Foundation and the City of Hope in Duarte to help support and encourage our local pediatric cancer patients and their families.  On March 15, firefighters gave two children a ride in the 1926 LaFrance fire engine from the City of Hope Pediatric Ward to the St. Baldrick's event, hosted at Matt Denny's Alehouse on Huntington Drive in Arcadia. Over 100 firefighters, police officers, and community members shaved their heads for the cause.  The event raised over $30,000 this year.
