Fire Department Responds to Fire in Food Court of Westfield Santa Anita Mall

The Arcadia Fire Department's activity report for May 22 through May 28.

The responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of May 22 through May 28.  The following is a breakdown of incident types for this period:

Monday, May 23

At 10:49 a.m., Engine 106 responded to electrical wires down in the 400 block of West Naomi Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a large tree branch had fallen on the electrical wires to a single-family dwelling, pulling live wires to the ground and creating an electrical outage at the residence.  Southern California Edison responded to the location. Arcadia Public Works Services was requested to the scene for further evaluation.

At 7:15 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 100 block of East Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a male patient who had experienced a syncopal episode from a possible diabetic reaction. The patient received advanced life support at the scene, including a 12-lead electrocardiogram and drug therapy for low blood sugar. The patient was transported to Arcadia for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, May 24

At 12:21 p.m., Engine 106 responded to a Law Enforcement/Humane Society assist in the 600 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel assisted in containing a deer that was wandering in and around the street and sidewalk impeding vehicle traffic. Animal control utilized a dart gun with a tranquilizing agent to subdue the deer. The deer was secured by animal control and later released to its natural habitat.

Wednesday, May 25

At 4:37 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 100 block of West Woodruff Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a female patient who was suffering from chest pain with shortness of breath. The patient received advanced life support at the scene; including oxygen, cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Emergency Department for further evaluation and treatment.

At 11:04 p.m. Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, Battalion 105, and units from the Los Angeles County and Pasadena Fire Departments responded to a structure fire in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel encountered heavy smoke within the food court and confirmed a small fire in the kitchen of a restaurant. Following fire extinguishment and smoke removal, the scene was released to security.

Thursday, May 26

At 6:26 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a public assist in the 1100 block of South Eighth Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a dog that had wedged itself under the foundation of the structure. Fire personnel assisted the resident by freeing the dog and coaxing it out from under the house with food.

Friday, May 27

At 7:43 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 200 block of East Camino Real Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a male patient who was suffering from chest pain. The patient received advanced life support at the scene; including oxygen, cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Emergency Department for further evaluation and treatment

Saturday, May 28

While standing by at the Los Angeles County Park during the Salute to Veterans Memorial, fire personnel handled three medical calls during the festivities.  One incident of note occurred when a member of the crowd was struck by a skydiver.  The patient sustained an injury to  his rib cage when he was hit by a 20 lb weight attached to the large American flag waving behind the skydiver.  Initially, the patient did not wish to be treated but was later treated and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Training

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 510 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 12 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the Department with administrative duties in the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and Department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
