Fire Department Responds to Man Who Had Seizure

A look at the major incidents handled by the Arcadia Fire Department.

The responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of  April 10 through April 16.  The following is a breakdown of incident types for this period:

Sunday, April 10

At 6:42 p.m., Engine 106, Engine 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to an in the 600 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated two female patients that had been struck by a vehicle.  One patient was found in the street with multiple injuries. This patient was transported to Arcadia , where she succumbed to her injuries.  The second patient was found sitting on the curb with various injuries. She was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. The scene was released to for investigation.

Tuesday, April 12

At 2:57 a.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 100 block of Fano Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a female patient who was suffering from abdominal pain. The patient received advanced life support measures at the scene, including an intravenous line and drug therapy for pain. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

At 12:30 p.m., Engine 105 responded to a vehicle fire in the intersection of St. Joseph Street and First Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a paper shredding truck with smoke coming from the rear of the truck.  It was determined that a fire originating in the on-board paper shredder ignited the adjacent combustible materials.  Fire personnel extinguished the fire in the machinery and had the truck operator dump the load of smoldering debris on the roadway for further extinguishment.  Arcadia Public Works personnel were contacted to pick up and dispose of the remains.

Wednesday, April 13

At 10:28 a.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to an auto versus pedestrian in the 1100 block of Arcadia Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly female with a foot injury caused by a vehicle running over her foot and knocking her to the ground.  Fire personnel treated the patient at the scene and transported her to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, April 14

At 6:46 p.m., Engine 105, with units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a vehicle accident on the eastbound 210 Freeway in Monrovia.  Upon arrival, fire personnel assisted in evaluating and treating a male patient suffering from neck and back pain due to a two-vehicle accident. The patient was placed in full cervical spine precautions and transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

 

Saturday, April 16

At 12:34 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 1400 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated and treated a male patient who was experiencing an altered mental status after a seizure. The patient received advanced life support measures at the scene including and intravenous line and drug therapy for seizure control and was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Training

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 454 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 12 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the Department with administrative duties in the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and Department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
