Fire Department Responds to Traffic Collision

The week of July 10 through July 16 saw a variety of medial assist and traffic collision calls to the AFD.

The responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of July 10 through July 16.  The following is a breakdown of incident types for this period:

Sunday, July 10

At 12:56 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue 106 responded to a victim of a fall in the 400 block of South Baldwin.  Upon arrival, fire crews found a young male suffering from facial pain and a nosebleed resulting from a fall.  The patient was treated on scene.

Monday, July 11

At 6:56 p.m., Engine 107, Rescue Ambulance 106, Rescue Ambulance 105, with units from Monrovia and Pasadena, responded to a traffic collision with injuries on the eastbound 210 Freeway west of Baldwin Avenue. Upon arrival, fire personnel found six vehicles involved. Further investigation found five patients suffering from minor to moderate injuries. All patients received basic or advanced life support at the scene. All patients were placed in full spinal immobilization and transported to and Huntington Memorial Emergency Departments for further evaluation and treatment.

Tuesday, July 12

At 6:09 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to medical assist in the 100 block of Naomi Avenue.  Fire crews found a female patient who was experiencing abdominal pain.  Paramedics performed advanced life support measures, including cardiac monitoring and pain management. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, July 13

At 10:11 a.m., Truck 105 and Rescue Ambulance 106 responded to a medical assist in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a male patient who was suffering from chest pain. The patient received advanced life support at the scene; including oxygen, cardiac monitoring, intravenous access, and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital Emergency Department for further evaluation and treatment.

Thursday, July 14

 At 7:05 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a traffic collision with reported injuries at the intersection of South Second Avenue and East Huntington Drive.  Fire crews sized up the scene of a two-vehicle accident with one patient suffering from extremity pain.  Paramedics provided basic life support measures on scene, including trauma control.  The patient refused additional treatment or transport.

Friday, July 15

At 6:12 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 100 block of West Woodruff Avenue. Fire personnel evaluated a male patient who was a victim of domestic violence, suffering from head pain and a facial laceration.  The patient received basic life support at the scene.  The patient refused additional treatment or transport. Arcadia Police was on scene for additional follow-up.

Saturday, July 16

 At 3:16 p.m., Engine 106 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 500 block of West Duarte Road.  Fire crews found a patient in cardiac arrest.  Paramedics performed advanced life support maneuvers on scene; including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation, and administering cardiac drugs.  The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Training

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 394 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of seven hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the Department with administrative duties in the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and Department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
