UPDATE: Fire Guts Monrovia Home While Owner Was Searching for Her Dog

A fire erupted in a home on Fifth Avenue as the occupant was searching the neighborhood for her dog. The dog was found, but the home appears lost.

A Monrovia home burst into flames Friday afternoon while the owner of the house was searching the neighborhood for her lost dog, police said.

The fire gutted a home on Fifth Avenue just north of Colorado Boulevard in Monrovia near the Arcadia border. The owner was not inside the home when the fire broke out at about 3:30 p.m., Monrovia Police Sgt. Dan Verna said.

"She was not inside the house. She was up the street looking for her dog," Verna said. "We found the dog running up the street."

Monrovia Fire Chief Christopher Donovan said a preliminary investigation determined that the fire was caused by an electrical issue in a closet. The house was a complete loss and he estimated the damage at $250,000.

No one was injured in the blaze, Donovan said.

Sad. It's so difficult to lose a home that way. You spend a lot of time looking for things you no longer own - that can opener, those scissors...

I hope she has good homeowner's insurance! She's going to need her pet to get through this tough time. So glad he was found!

The dog took off because it knew something was up. Maybe it was just scared, maybe it wanted its human companion to run after it out of the house, but either way it just saved that lady's life. I hope she can find somewhere that will take her and her dog in, she needs her furry companion now more than ever.
