Firemen Extricate Five From Overturned Vehicle

A look at the major service calls by the Arcadia Fire Department last week.

The responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of April 3 through April 9.  The following is a breakdown of incident types for this period:

Sunday, April 3

At 2:14 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, and units from the Monrovia Fire Department, responded to a reported traffic collision involving an overturned vehicle on the eastbound 210 freeway east of Huntington Drive. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single vehicle on its side with five occupants still inside. Fire personnel extricated and evaluated all five of the occupants and transported one patient with various traumatic injuries to an area emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Monday, April 4

At 3:19 p.m., Truck 105 and Engine 107 responded to a person trapped in the elevator in the 400 block of South Baldwin Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered that the power was out in the area due to a blown electrical transformer a few blocks away.  Fire personnel helped free an employee trapped in the elevator utilizing specialized tools and assisted two non-ambulatory shoppers from the third floor to the ground floor.

Tuesday, April 5

At 12:54 p.m., Engine 107, Engine 106, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Battalion 105 responded to a reported traffic collision with persons trapped in the intersection of Don Ricardo Drive and West Foothill Boulevard. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a single vehicle had struck a Southern California Edison (SCE) power pole.  One person was trapped inside the vehicle. Fire personnel used a variety of hydraulic power tools to remove the driver’s side front and rear doors to extricate the patient. Fire paramedics, performed advanced life support measures at the scene and transported the patient to an area trauma center for further evaluation and treatment.

Wednesday, April 6

At 5:36 p.m., Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 1700 block of South First Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a fifty-year old patient who had fainted.  Fire personnel performed advanced life support measures at the scene and transported the patient to an area hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Friday, April 8

At 6:57 p.m., Engine 105, Engine 106, Engine 107, Truck 105, Pasadena Truck 32, Rescue Ambulance 106 and Battalion 105 responded to the smell of smoke in a structure in the 1200 block of Golden West Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered there had been a recent fire in the laundromat at the location.  Engine 106 and Truck 105 remained on scene to investigate the cause of the fire and to verify total fire extinguishment.

Saturday, April 9

At 2:55 a.m., Engine 105, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, and units from the Monrovia and Los Angeles County Fire Departments responded to a reported vehicle into a structure in the 600 block of East Live Oak Avenue.  Upon arrival, fire personnel found a sheared gas meter leaking natural gas at the rear of a commercial restaurant. Fire units requested the Southern California Gas Company to the scene, safety zones were established, and hose lines placed in service in the event of a fire.  During the incident, fire personnel stopped the flow of gas by inserting a red wood plug into the gas opening. The Arcadia Building Department was notified due to structural damage to the business. The scene was released to the gas company.

Training

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department conducted a total of 467 hours of training. Some of the subjects covered were: Hose Evolutions, Ladder Evolutions, Ventilation Techniques, Salvage and Overhaul Techniques, Tiller Certification, Defensive Driving, Engine Company Equipment, Search and Rescue, Communications, EOC Operations, Records Management, Fire Suppression Tactics, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic Continuing Education, Hazardous Materials, Lighting Operations, Rope Rescue, Incident Command, Pre-Incident Planning, Supervision and Management, and Standard Operating Guideline Review.

Volunteer Weekly Activity Report

During the reporting period, the Arcadia Fire Department had a total of 6 hours of volunteer activities.  Specifically, volunteers from the community donated their valuable time last week in assisting the Department with administrative duties in the Fire Prevention Bureau and processing emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports.  It is worth noting that all volunteers and Department personnel who have access to emergency medical services forms and paramedic reports are trained on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
