A bear found in a vacant house in Bradbury had to be sedated and taken to an animal hospital for observation, sheriff's officials said.

The 300-pound bear was discovered around 10:40 a.m. in the 200 block of Barranca Road, according to Sgt. Ann Devane of the Temple sheriff's station.

"Deputies attempted to scare the bear away from the house and into his natural habitat, however the bear was not amused and did not react to the deputies' attempts to scare him off," Devane said.

Officials from the Department of Fish and Wildlife responded to the scene and noticed the bear appeared to be sick or injured, Devane said.

At some point, the bear walked out of the house and into the yard where he was shot with tranquilizing darts, which did not take effect until after the third dart," she said.

The bear, once sedated, was carried from the yard to a truck and taken to an animal hospital for treatment and observation, Devane said.
