Hazmat specialists say a suspicious liquid spilled along San Carlos Road on Monday is muriatic acid, a substance commonly used in pool cleaners.
At approximately 1 p.m., Arcadia firefighters responded to a reported hazardous materials spill on San Carlos Road. They found five 1-gallon containers of an unknown liquid strewn along San Carlos Road from Orange Grove Avenue to Arbolada Drive. Three of those containers had begun leaking onto the street.
Firefighters immediately contained the spill to prevent any liquid from getting into the storm drain system.
Meanwhile, hazardous materials experts from Burbank and Glendale identified the substance as muriatic acid and immediately neutralized it. Arcadia Fire Department spokeswoman Beth Stogner said the containers likely fell off of a pool maintenance vehicle.
