A local wrestling coach accused of sex crimes against children made his first court appearance Wednesday but arraignment was put off until next year.
Herbert Daniel Ortiz, 29, also known as Herbert Ortizmonroy, is charged with four counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child, according to a Los Angeles County District Attorney's spokeswoman.
He was ordered back to court Jan. 10 for arraignment at Rio Hondo Municipal Court; he is behind bars at Pitchess Detention Center, in Castaic, in lieu of $1 million bail, according to court records.
Ortiz allegedly molested a 14-year-old boy, according to authorities.
The alleged victim was reportedly befriended by Ortiz, who was an assistant wrestling coach at Rosemead High School from 2007 to 2009 and has been an instructor for the Bad News Panthers Children Wrestling Club since 2010, Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker said.
The alleged victim's mother said she had been alerted to a YouTube video made by another boy saying he had been victimized by the suspect. He warned other parents to protect their children.
The mother recognized the suspect, asked her son if he had been a victim and the boy said he was, Parker said.
