UPDATE: Police Unable to Locate Suspected Thief Outside Westfield Santa Anita

Despite the deployment of air and land units, police were unable to locate a suspected thief who escaped from the Santa Anita Mall last week.

Authorities remain on the lookout for a suspected thief who fled the on Friday, sparking a manhunt involving multiple police cruisers and helicopters. Authorities took extra precautions because Friday was for neighboring Autumn Meet.

According to spokesman Tom Le Veque, an African American man in his early- to mid-30's had stolen a pair of shoes from the in the mall and left. A patrol officer spotted the man at Gate 10, north of Huntington Drive at around 1:30 p.m.

The suspect fled on foot towards an apartment complex on the west side of Baldwin Avenue when the officer attempted to confront him, Le Veque said.

Despite their exhaustive efforts, authorities never found the suspect, whom they described as approximately 5-feet-10 and weighing around 180 pounds. He had a deep voice and wore a gray S/S shirt with a circular design on the front, paired with baggy black pants.
