Woman Airlifted After Fall in Eaton Canyon, Deputy Injured During Rescue

A 38-year-old Whittier woman fell and injured herself hiking in Eaton Canyon on Sunday

A 38-year-old Whittier woman injured herself in a fall in Eaton Canyon on Sunday and was evacuated by helicopter, according to a message sent out by Capt. Michael Parker of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The fall happened around 11:30 a.m. and a deputy was injured while making the rescue.  According to a report in the Pasadena Star-News the deputy had a minor knee injury, but was taken to the hospital to have it checked out.

Rich Deleon, of the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team, said the injured deputy was a search and rescue team member (the all-volunteer teams are requried to become reserve deputies with the Sheriff's Department).

He said the team member was carrying a stretcher up the trail to reach the injured hiker and he slipped on some rocks and fell.  Because of how the stretcher must be carried, the team member's view would have been obstructed, making it tougher to hike.

The injured deputy was able to walk out, Deleon said, and he did go to the hospital to get checked out.

Deleon also said the injured woman was not trying to climb, but rather slipped during the hike to the first waterfall on some wet rocks.

Since the woman was ultimately airlifted out, the stretcher never ended up being needed, Deleon said.
