City Council to Vote on Plan to Restore City Hall Murals

The City Council will vote Tuesday on a proposal to pay a contractor $22,000 to restore two murals at city hall that depict Arcadia's founding.

The murals are presently covered in stucco and only portions of them have been uncovered, Arcadia Development Services Director Jason Kruckeberg said.

"We're not sure of the overall condition though the tiles that have been exposed are in pretty good shape," Kruckeberg said.

Kruckeberg said it's possible that the murals were covered up because they are badly damaged but he said there are no city records showing their condition. The murals date back to 1958 and depict the area's history from the Spanish exploration to the days of Lucky Baldwin, according to the Pasadena Star-News.

Staff recommends that the city contract with Silverlake LLC to repair the murals, and work would include removal of the stucco and the cleaning and repair of damage tiles, according to a council agenda report.

The project is part of a three-phase renovation of City Hall that began in 2009. Energy efficient retrofits were installed last year in the first phase and interior renovation was completed in March. The third phase—exterior improvements—will be completed soon, according to the report.
