Kovacic, Wuo Take City Council Seats

The current and former mayor will serve on the Council four more years.

Mayor Gary Kovacic retained his City Council seat Tuesday, while former Mayor John Wuo will return to the Council after a two-year hiatus. Kovacic dominated the election, winning every precinct over the four other candidates vying for two open Council seats.

Arcadia voters cast their ballots soley by mail for the first time in the city's history.

What began as a tight race between Wuo and Santa Anita Oaks Homeowners' Association President and former school board member Mary Dougherty quickly became a clear-cut victory, with Wuo receiving 607 more votes than Dougherty.

Retired businessman and three-time Council candidate Sho Tay and former Arcadia Association of Realtors President Henry Nuñez trailed far behind the other candidates, earning a collective 2,612 votes.

Meanwhile, Arcadia Historical Society President Gene Glasco ran unopposed for the City Clerk position vacated by Jim Barrows.

In other election news, voters also approved a tax requiring hotel guests to pay taxes for the first 90 days of their stay; guests previously paid taxes on up to 30 days of their stay.

Measure D passed with a resounding 79 percent of the vote.
