Monrovia Fire: Brush Fire Remains 85% Contained

City officials warn residents of increased bear and rattlesnake sightings.

As a brush fire continues to burn in Monrovia, city officials say Monday’s favorable weather could aid in efforts to fully contain the fire.

The brush fire, which burned 125 acres at its peak over the weekend, is still 85 percent contained with no additional acreage burned since Sunday night, according to city spokesperson Jen McClain.

McClain said 96 personnel crews have helped decrease the height of the fire, while battling steep terrain and other obstacles. As Monday’s wind remains light and humidity is high, authorities believe more progress should be made. However, there is no estimated time when the fire will be 100 percent contained.

But the flames have driven wildlife to residential areas where rattlesnakes and bears have been spotted. McClain said Monrovia Animal Control has received seven calls of bear sightings since the fire broke out.

City officials are also reminding residents to be mindful of firefighters and to drive slowly in the area.
