Video: Free Legal Advice at Law Day 2011

City of Arcadia and the Arcadia Chinese Association team up for 13th annual Law Day.

and spokeswoman Josephine Louie held a press conference Wednesday at the ’s Cay Mortenson Auditorium to spread the word about Law Day 2011, which takes place this Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library.

Mayor Kovacic--who’s a partner at the downtown Los Angeles law firm Sullivan, Workman & Dee--came up with the idea to bring Law Day to Arcadia 13 years ago. Since that time, thousands of residents have attended the yearly event and received free legal and financial advice from professionals in the field.

"This is an opportunity for people to come to our library and get answers to their legal questions without going through a complex system of trying to figure out whether I should hire an attorney or not,” the mayor, who quite fittingly spent Wednesday morning in court, said during his comments. “This really opens the door to our legal system to folks who feel intimidated by that system."

The mayor emphasized that no legal question is off limits.

“We’re not going to turn anybody away. There is no issue that we can’t at least provide an opinion about,” Kovacic said.

He took special time Wednesday to commend the Arcadia Chinese Association for its many volunteer efforts, including its help in organizing Law Day.
