Blog: Enough! Still Think We Don't Need Gun Control?

Today, in a small Connecticut town, four times as many people were murdered with a gun than were murdered with a gun in Japan for the entire 2009 year.

Twenty-seven people (mostly children) were murdered today with a gun at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut (population 27,000).

That is nearly four times as many gun murders as occurred in Japan (population 127,000,000) in the entire year of 2009 (7). In 2006 exactly two people were murdered by gun in Japan. It is illegal for citizens to own almost any gun in Japan. “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.”

That is correct.

That is why severe limitations on gun ownership and access to guns must be in effect in the United States.

We do, and I'm for more rigid rules, but I just hesitate to pounce on this political issue in the wake of such horror. But, perhaps, repugnant though it may be, it is the best time.

First, I mourn for the victims. But reaction to such tragic news just to promote gun control is politicizing the deaths. Americans have the right, as you and I know, to protect ourselves from assault and harm by arming ourselves with guns. We as citizens need to be more informed about using and having access to guns. What we don't need is knee-jerk reactions and galvanizing government control of our decision to arm and protect ourselves. Comparing American society to Japanese society and culture is totally misleading.
One big problem that might clue you in to the real struggle at hand is that liberals are increasingly embracing less freedom and more governmental control out of spite and disdain for the U.S. Constitution. Maybe focus your so-called critical thinking away from government internment camp leanings and more toward our actual freedoms -- keeping in mind that freedom, real American Freedom, means possessing and encouraging responsible character in our fellow citizens -- not taking away their freedoms, just because you feel Americans are incapable of practicing their freedoms. With all respect, I believe you mean well - but you're simply reacting to the issue of gun control while disregarding the fundamentals of American freedom that is dependent on responsibility and accurately informing ourselves. God bless!

People talk about American freedom as if it only applies to them. What about the freedom to go to school, or the mall, or a movie theatre and not get shot to death by - a gun? Having everyone in America carry a gun would not make Americans safe. Also, the 2nd Amendment was written in a time of bayonets. We did not have Uzis, AK-47s and other weapons that can spray and wipe out several people at once. We also did not have organized police departments the way we do today. It is not about more government(or any other popular Republican phrase going around), it is about less death. And so-called gun rights advocates don't seem to think there is any circumstance whatsoever that should allow more regulation on their precious death weapons. And to think, this is a developed nation using such short-sighted logic.

As a mother, housewife and Christian, I take exception to your point. People do not talk about American freedom AS IF it only applies to them. People are not as dumb as you make them out to be. When talking about freedom people are not presupposing a dialogue on oppressing everyone else that does not fall in line with their beliefs. Of course, liberals tend to assume they have a monopoly on truth - and the discussion of freedom as it suits their own sensibilities. The rest of us American folk have evolved and CAN discuss civil issues intelligently - without reactionary phrases like 'precious death weapons' or 'short-sighted logic'.
This demonstrates the arrogance from a self-satisfying intellectual elitist. Americans have the right to arm and protect themselves. Sorry you don't agree, but don't attack us for exercising our Constitutional right.

JT - "repugnant though it may be, it is the best time"
At a Christmas party yesterday somebody summed it concisely: in nature it's adapt or die. America is not adapting and we are certainly dying BY GUN in our gun -drenched society - "According to the FBI Uniform Crime Report, between 2006 and 2010 47,856 people were murdered in the U.S. with firearms." And that number, of course, is dwarfed by the overall number of deaths and injuries by gun (accidental, suicide, non-murder gun violence). Change or more of the same. Time to choose.

Shame on so-called Christians who love their guns more than children. Have you ever considered that these horrific incidents are a test of your Compassion-- one that your heart is failing, miserably, to open to? Are you calling for a more severe example? Does your blood thirsty god require the sacrifice of innocents? Shame on you.

Robert, what is your specific proposal for the US adapting amid these times? In other words, what do you propose we do to curb gun violence?

Hi Susan, The graphic shows that in only one year from 2002-2011 were more Hispanics arrested thanRead More Blacks (2011) - if you hover your mouse over each point you can see the raw number of arrests for each group each year. That's despite there being a substantially larger Hispanic population in L.A. County. The data comes from the Dept. of Justice and was reported by the ACLU - and I believe the point of the report is that there is racial profiling going on, not to suggest that black people are using more pot. In fact, the study suggests that there is not significantly more prevalent pot use among any one racial group. The figure 2.6 times as likely refers to blacks vs. whites, as in mentioned in the first sentence of the article, and comes from the ACLU study. Our intention was definitely not sensationalism but rather to direct readers to this national ACLU study that included L.A. County data. Let me know if I can answer any other questions.
