Video: Arcadia High Fundraiser Nets Nearly $95,000 in Three Days

Million dollar goal appears unlikely but cash haul an impressive showing by Arcadia High students and community in their ongoing effort to fight drastic AUSD budget cuts.

The had reason to celebrate Wednesday when it was announced students had raised $94,128 in their growing effort to fight drastic budget cuts for the 2011-2012 school year that will likely lead to dozens of teacher layoffs and a loss of AP courses.

Spearheaded by Arcadia Student Body President, Arcadia High’s began Monday and will continue through the week. The goal to raise $1 million appears unlikely as the final donation day is Friday, but nonetheless the nearly six-figure haul is an impressive showing for the students' grassroots effort. in March and the district is facing a $349 per student reduction, roughly $3.1 million overall, in funding unless the public passes an extension of temporary sales tax and temporary vehicle license fees that Governor Jerry Brown has proposed. If Brown's extensions pass—and at this point it appears extremely unlikely --AUSD would face a much more manageable $19 reduction per student. The funds that students raise will be given to the Arcadia Educational Fund which will gift them to AUSD. AEF will continue the ambitious fundraising effort in a Walk-A-Thon scheduled to take place on May 13.

Superintendent Shawn has previously said that the district would need about an additional $5 million to offset the budget reductions.
