Arcadia High Student Earns Rare Perfect Score on AP Calculus Test

Nathan Chou is one of only 11 in the world to achieve the feat this year.

Nathan Chou, a 17-year-old Arcadia High School student, earned a perfect score on the Advanced Placement Calculus BC exam in May, making him one of only 11 in the world to achieve the feat this year, the Arcadia Unified School District announced this week.

In a press release, the school district listed the following facts about Chou:

  • Senior at Arcadia High School
  • Scored a perfect score on AP Calculus Exam taken in May 2013
  • One of only 11 students in the WORLD, out of 3,938,1000, that received a perfect score out of AP exams taken in 2013.
  • Nathan’s score was a top score of a 5, only 14.3% of exams taken in 2013 scored a 5
  • Born and raised in Arcadia
  • Parents moved to Arcadia before he was born so he would be in Arcadia Unified School District
  • Attended Baldwin Stocker Elementary School and then First Avenue Middle School before AHS
  • Straight A student at Arcadia High School
  • Speaks 3 languages: English, Mandarin, Spanish
  • Academic Clubs: Math Team 4 years, Science Bowl 3 years, Quiz Bowl, Science Olympiad, Physics Team
  • Member of Symphony Orchestra for 4 years, plays violin and piano
  • Has designed and developed academic student support websites
  • Participates in website coding competitions
  • National Merit Scholarship Semi-finalist, likely finalist but results not know yet
  • Plays piano for his church
  • Traveled to Taiwan over the summer for a short-term mission helping children learn English
