Arcadia's Roni Yamane Has Strong Finish at State Championships

This marks Yamane's first time competing at the state level.

standout runner Roni Yamane had a strong showing at Saturday's CIF-Division 1 Cross Country State Championships, placing 20th in a field of 190.

She clocked in at 18:34. Hagen Reedy, a junior from Buchanan High School, won the race with a time of 17:27. 

Yamane was the Apache Ladies' only representative at state.

The team . But Yamane earned her berth by finishing eighth in the individual race at the CIF-Southern Section Finals.

As is her style, Yamane started at the back of the pack Saturday and gradually worked her way through the field. By the end of the two-mile mark, she was 28th. During the last mile—a combination of dirt trails, street and grass—she picked off eight more runners as she crossed the finish line.

"It felt pretty good," Yamane said of the state race. "But, I know that I couldn't have done it without the support of my support team who came up with me, my parents and my coaches."

Though she finished 20th overall in the race, she placed fourth amongst the Division 1 sophomores and 14th among all the sophomores in the state.
