Bear Prompts Second Lockdown at Foothills Middle School

The cub wandered back into the foothills on its own.

A hungry bear cub paid the Foothills Middle School campus a visit Thursday afternoon.

The bear reportedly lunched from a trashcan shortly after 12:30 p.m. School officials placed students on a brief lockdown while officers kept a close eye on the animal, Arcadia Police Lt. Bob Anderson said.

A little after 1 p.m., the cub decided to head back to his home in the foothills and police lifted the lockdown.

This marked the second lockdown of the day at Foothills Middle. A bomb threat at a nearby Rite Aid prompted the first lockdown early Thursday morning.

We have had so many, many bear sightings lately here in Arcadia. It's getting time to start using bear-proof trash containers, as other communities near bears have been doing for years. They will cost time and money, but how much more time in lost productivity, or danger from attraction to hungry bears, are we willing to put up with, before we end up having to do this anyway?

Ross, I've not heard of any discussion regarding bear-proofing trash containers, but this sounds like a great question to post to the city council. I'll ask Mayor Bob Harbicht what he thinks and get back to you!

We approached our trash company years ago about bear-proof cans like Monrovia. Wasn't something they would do for free. My husband took matters into his own hands. He went to Home Depor, spent a few dollars on chain and hooks. You should see our trash cans! They are bear proof. Double chained. Our neighbors have since done the same to their cans. We get bears almost everyday at our house. A few montha ago our next door neighbor had her trash can in her garage. A bear decided he wanted it, so he lifted the garage, actually ate some of the bottom of the garage door and got the trash. Our neighbor was upset and may have already contacted our city folks for assistance in provided bear proof cans.

I go to that school and I saw the cub with my own eyes. There was so much chaos. people were running in every direction. People were even trying to touch it.

I see them frequently. From my experience, I just look or take pictures then move along. They know you are not going to bother them and they don't bother you. It's much like deer.

the cub was adorable to me. I felt bad for it when people started screaming at it. It got so scared. It came again today.
