Students at were greeted by Principal Ilene Anderson as they arrived Wednesday for the first day of school.
“My favorite time every day at school is being out here in the morning and seeing their shining eyes and how excited they are to be here,” Anderson said. “They look like they’re ready to learn, they’re motivated and we’re excited to have them back.”
The students and faculty are returning to a completely updated and renovated campus, Anderson said.
“We’re just completing four years of modernization construction so today we’re coming into a pristine, gorgeous school with all new technology, new landscaping, a new library, a new computer lab and lunch pavilions, so it’s just beautiful and we’re really proud and excited to be here,” Anderson said.
Katia, a fifth-grader and member of the school’s Safety Patrol, made sure students being dropped off got out of their cars safely.
“It’s really fun and it makes you feel good to open people’s door for them and say ‘How are you’ or ‘Good morning.’ Then when they walk off to go to class they have a smile on their face,” Katia said.
Katia is excited to make new friends and meet her new teacher, she said.
“I’m also excited about seeing my classroom and finding out what I’m going to learn this year,” Katia said.
Allison Tran, 4, couldn’t wait to come to school and start kindergarten, according to her mother, Tammy Tran.
“She’s been counting down every day and she keeps saying, ‘Mom, I can’t wait to go to Highland Oaks,’” Tran said.
