Arcadia Boys and Girls Keep Pacific League Cross Country Titles

Fourth year in a row for the boys, and second year in a row for the Girls.

ARCADIA - The Boys' Cross Country team successfully defended its league title Thursday afternoon with a decisive victory over rivals Burbank and Burroughs high schools. 

Senior Sergio Gonzalez led the Apaches to their fourth straight Pacific League title, clocking in at 14:26. Burroughs' Anthony Monroy, who won the season's first league meet, came in second at 14:34. Apache Ryan Vargas placed third with a time of 14:43.

The race was over after the first eight runners. Arcadia placed their scoring 5 within those first 8 positions, taking the first, third and sixth through eighth positions for a team score of 25. Second place Burbank scored 59 while third place Burroughs scored 78.

Arcadia coach Jim O’Brien expressed his pleasure with his team’s performance. The Apaches posted the third fastest team time on record for the course.

“I was really pleased with the teamwork, and the fact that the guys were glued together throgh most of the race. And, I was very excited for Sergio Gonzalez, for winning the Pacific League Most Valuable Runner award.”

The Arcadia High Girl’s team also successfully defended their league title, holding off a very strong Crescenta Valley team. Arcadia posted a team score of 24 to Crescenta Valley’s 31. 

Sophomore Veronica “Ronnie” Yamane led the lady Apaches, coming in at 17:16. Teammate Alejandra Quintero followed Yamane with a time of 17:27. The girls placed their top five runners in the first nine positions, scoring first, second, fifth, seventh and ninth. Crescenta Valley kept it close, placing their top five in the third, fourth, eigth and tenth positions. 

Both the girls' and boys' teams will compete in the CIF Prelims on Nov. 12 at Mt. SAC.
