Arcadia Girls Soccer Opens League Play With Convincing Win

Apaches explode for four goals in shutout of Glendale.

After an unexpected loss to Alverno last week, the Arcadia girls soccer team got off to a strong start in Pacific League play with a 4-0 win over Glendale on Wednesday.

Forward Lisa Rosas started the scoring when she put the ball into the back of the net off a feed from freshman forward Rebecca Bobadilla. Within two minutes of the first goal, it seemed like Bobadilla and Rosas once again had connected for a goal, but the goal was overturned on an offsides call.

Two more offsides calls kept the Apaches out of scoring position, but Arcadia forward Hayley Greep scored the second goal of the game, which brought the Arcadia players on the bench to their feet with roars of cheers. A penalty kick by senior Sydney Dreves sailed past the Glendale keeper with ease to extend the Apaches' lead to 3-0 at the end of the first half.

The second half nearly opened with another goal for Arcadia when forward Alex Cortes sent a header screaming toward the goal. But Cortes was just off the mark with her attempt, and the final goal of the game came from the girl who helped start Arcadia's offensive barrage, Bobadilla.

"I just try to go out there and play my hardest every day," said Bobadilla of her efforts as a freshman on the varsity squad. "Glendale wasn't the strongest team, so we were able to shoot and score more goals."

The Glendale girls soccer program is currently dealing with challenges and changes in the start of its season. New coach Victor Aquino, who used to be the Glendale boys junior varsity coach, has only worked with the girls for the past month.

"This team today is completely different than they were three weeks ago," Aquino said. "One of our big issues was conditioning, and we will continue to work on that."

Both Arcadia and Glendale play on Friday when the Apaches host Cathedral Catholic, while Glendale takes on Pasadena.
