Arcadia Stunned by Burroughs

Apaches shocked by visiting school from Burbank in 41-29 Pacific League football loss.

The road to a Pacific League title seemed to be rather smooth for the after it defeated Muir High to open the league season a week ago.

But the Apaches hit a big bump in the road Friday night as they were stunned by defending co-league champion Burroughs High of Burbank in a 41-29 loss at home.

“We weren’t at our best tonight, but you have to give them credit,” Arcadia coach Jon Dimalante said of Burroughs. ”We just weren’t clicking like we have all season. It kind of just caught up with us.”

Arcadia entered the contest with a 3-1 record and was ranked second in the CIF Southern Section Southeast Division poll. Burroughs entered 1-3. But the Indians’ record was a little misleading as it played three tough teams from the Santa Clarita Valley.

Arcadia (3-2), which played with star running back Sheldon McKinley, nearly rallied from a 34-10 deficit in the fourth quarter, only to come up short in the end. McKinley, who suffered an ankle injury against Muir, could return next week against Burbank High.

Apaches quarterback completed 32 of 50 pass attempts for 332 yards and two touchdowns. He was also intercepted twice.

University of Washington-bound receiver caught 16 passes for 169 yards, but did not score a touchdown.

Burroughs got a huge game from running back Zander Anding who finished with 31 carries for 301 yards and five touchdowns.

“We came together,” Anding said. “Everyone thought Arcadia was going to kill us. It was great coming in here being the underdogs."

Burroughs opened to a 14-0 first-half lead. Arcadia cut the deficit to 14-7 as Carr and Robbie Haines hooked up on a 20-yard touchdown with 2:40 left in the first half to get the Apaches on the board.

The closest the Apaches would get was 14-10, following a 24-yard field goal by Nick Pulciano with 8:08 left to play in the third quarter.

The Apaches had a chance to take the lead as they were driving in Burroughs territory later in the third when Carr was intercepted by Kody Jensen.

Anding then helped Burroughs score another touchdown. The Indians then surprised everyone by recovering two consecutive onsides kicks later in the quarter that helped increase the lead to 28-10 at the end of the third quarter.
