CV Girls' Cross Country Tops Arcadia

Falcons win battle on home course in second Pacific League meet.

The rivalry between the  and  High girls’ cross country teams got even more interesting Thursday in the second Pacific League meet of the season at Crescenta Valley Park.

The Falcons, ranked sixth in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, took advantage of the fact that it was running on its home course by earning a 25-33 win over the Apaches. Arcadia is ranked fifth in the CIF Southern Section Division I poll.

“We’re working on our pack. This year our pack is really good,” said CV star Cali King, who finished fourth amongst her teammates. “We know everything about this course and we know how to use it to our advantage.”

Arcadia’s Yeronica Yamane won the 3-mile course in 18 minutes, 58 seconds.

CV’s Ali Johnson was second in 19:21.

Also for CV were Brooke Moultrie (fourth, 19:30), Erika Johnson (fifth, 19:34), King (19:35), Hannah Ruby (ninth, 19:54), Megan Melnyk (10th, 20:11) and Haley Wizeman (12th, 20:27).

Alejandra Quintero (third, 19:27), Glindyll Mancia (seventh, 19:44), Naomi Wilcox (11th, 20:21), Joyce Liao (13th, 20:34), Meghan Kamae (15th, 20:41) and Alice Yang (19th, 21:00) round out the Apaches.

Arcadia, ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division I poll, easily won the boys’ varsity race topping closest competition Burbank by a 23-33 score.

Sergio Gonzalez won easily in 15:34.

Mitchell Pratt (fourth, 15:56), Ryan Vargas (seventh, 16:12), Estevan De La Rosa (eighth, 16:15), Charlie Shen (11th, 16:26), Anu Shah (13th, 16:35) and Happy Happy (21st, 17:12) round out the Apaches.

“I went out and it was a very relaxed race,” Gonzalez said. “We still have another race (Friday) so we had to hold back a little.”

The Apaches will be running Friday in the McDonald’s Rough Rider Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno, site of the California State Meet. The race is intended to help the Apaches experience running on the course before the state finals.

Crescenta Valley finished third in the boys’ competition.

Mike Duncan led the Falcons by finishing ninth in 16:15.

Gabe Collison (16th, 16:43), Aaron Esparza (17th, 16:44), Dylan Devens (18th, 17:00), Brandon Baum (20th, 17:07), Matt Manalo (23rd, 17:15) and Andrew Hart (32nd, 17:47) round out the Falcons.
