If Derek Carr has a good season for Fresno, he might opt to make himself eligible for the 2013 NFL draft, which would give Myles Carr an opening to move into the starting role as a sophomore, DeRuyter said.

“Derek Carr may be facing a tough decision,” DeRuyter said.

DeRuyter, who is originally from Long Beach and played linebacker and tight end at St. John Bosco High before playing at the Air Force Academy, was hired in December by Fresno State after spending the past two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Texas A&M. DeRuyter replaced Pat Hill.

DeRuyter told Dilamante he liked Myles Carr’s footwork and arm strength.
Among those attending the function in Altadena was prominent Arcadia resident Mark Shuster, the CEO of the Shuster Financial Group. Shuster is a 1979 graduate of Fresno State.
