Girls Soccer: Arcadia Upsets Crescenta Valley in Regular Season Finale

Apaches end Falcons' hopes of undefeated Pacific League season.

The Crescenta Valley girls soccer team may be the 2010-11 Pacific League champions, but the Falcons looked like anything but league champions Thursday as longtime rival Arcadia dominated in a 3-0 win at home in both team’s regular season finale.

“It kind of feels like we got hit by a bus. You got to get up and start fresh and we have the playoffs to think about now,” CV coach Jorden Schulz said. “I think sometimes the hard loss is good for us. It slaps us back into reality.”

The win gives Arcadia (11-6-3, 9-3-2 in the PL) a third-place league finish thanks to help from Burroughs, which defeated Burbank 2-0.

CV ends the regular season at 12-4-4 overall and 10-1-3 in league.

Arcadia got three goals from freshman Bailey Mushisky, who spent the first half of the season on the Apache junior varsity team.

“This is the first game I got a hat trick in since I moved up to varsity,” said Mushisky, whose older sister Jade played for the Apaches and graduated last year. “This is probably the most we’ve beaten them by recently.”

The Apaches went up 1-0 in the 19th minute when Arcadia freshman Rachel Schroeder’s corner kick cross found Mushisky at the back post for a goal.

Arcadia doubled its lead in the 28th minute when freshman Rebecca Bonadilla put a through ball that Mushisky and Falcon goalie Allie Woodward both attempted to control. The ball ended up loose at Mushisky’s feet after her collision with Woodward, and she was able to place the ball into the empty net.

Down 2-0 at halftime, CV looked stronger to start the second half.

Katie Callister’s shot in the 44th minute forced Apache goalie Adriana Maldonado to make a save. Jordan Royer nearly connected in the 46th minute on a free kick that went just over the crossbar.

Sharon Lee almost scored on a cross from Bri Ismale in the 62nd minute, but Lee’s header was right at Maldonado.

Arcadia put the game out of reach in the 66th minute when Mushisky had a one-on-one situation with Woodward and was taken down by the CV goalkeeper resulting in a penalty kick.

Mushisky then converted the PK with a shot in the left corner of the goal.

Arcadia coach Paul Miles said the win was huge for his team.

“It means a lot to them,” Miles said of his players. “They know they’ve been struggling lately so coming out and beating a team like this is a confidence booster.”
