Therapy in Hollywood movies

Most people who never have been in therapy have no idea what therapy is all about except for what is seen in the movies.  Have you seen Good Will Hunting, or Prince of Tides?  Please keep in mind THAT really does not happen in the therapy room.  Therapy is supposed to be ALL about you, not about the therapist. You will not be having lunch with your  therapist or hanging out at the mall with your therapist.  Your therapist is not supposed to tell you any personal details about their own lives as to not contaminate your therapeutic relationship.  The session is solely to be about you.  It will feel uncomfortable at first since you are getting to know the therapist but like anything, the real work comes when you overcome this.  Once you begin to feel comfortable with your therapist, you will get into this zone/space/mindset that whatever you say is ok.  Your therapist wants to listen and understand and work along with you toward what you want, not what the therapist wants.  Think of your therapist as someone working by your side, not someone who is racing ahead trying to get you to catch up to them, or behind you trying to push you along.

If movies showed an accurate depiction of what happens in the therapy room, what you would see would be a black and white silent film capturing every movement of an interaction.  No words would be needed to express how the client  feels and the therapist would be able to mirror their actions with feeling so that the client felt understood. The closest thing therapy resembles when we think about movies is that at both places, you learn to enjoy the silence.
